Maintaining a strong Industrial sector has been at the centre of French political and economic policy for many years. France is the world’s third largest exporter of cars, the fourth largest of armaments and weapons technology and a leading player in telecommunications (including communication satellites), ship building (naval and specialist ships), pharmaceuticals, and chemicals. French groups specialized in construction and civil engineering have interests which span the globe and France is also a leader in nuclear power.

This strategy of encouraging French industrial groups to develop internationally has turned many of these organisations into household names. The highly visible French multinational ‘champions’ are only a part of the country’s industrial story. There are a whole host of smaller companies, both French and subsidiaries of foreign groups which make up the industrial sector.
